from danierdrezner.com on blogging

http://www.danieldrezner.com/archives/001489.html

(1) Blogging is politically important in large part because it affects mainstream media, and helps set the terms of political debate (in political science jargon, it creates β€˜focal points’ and β€˜frames’). Note that we don’t provide an exhaustive account of blogs and politics – some aspects of blogging (fundraising for parties, effects on political values in the general public), we don’t have more than anecdotal data on. There’s plenty of room for other people to do interesting research on all of this.

(2) Incoming links in the political blogosphere are systematically skewed, but not according to a β€œpower law” distribution, as Clay Shirky and others have argued of the blogosphere as a whole. Instead, they follow a lognormal distribution. We reckon that the most likely explanation for this is that offered by Pennock et al. – they argue that not only do the β€˜rich get richer’ (i.e. sites that already have a lot of links tend to get more), but that link-poor sites stand a chance of becoming rich too. Late entrants into the political blogosphere can do well in the political blogosphere as long as they’re interesting and attract some attention – bad timing isn’t destiny.

(3) Because of the systematic skewedness of the political blogosphere, a few β€œfocal point” sites can provide a rough index of what is going on in the blogosphere – interesting points of view on other sites will often percolate up to them as smaller blogs try to get big blogs to link to them, by informing them of interesting stories. Thus, we may expect that journalists and other media types who read blogs will tend to all gravitate towards a few β€˜big name’ bloggers as their way of keeping up with what is going on in the blogosphere as a whole.

Techniques derived from Social Networking Theory and Multivariate Statistics are presented and applied in a case study regarding Greek political blogs.
Abstract

Blogs are web pages that accept comments-posts of users in the form of a diary. They allow posting and exchange of opinions and are part of WEB 2.0. Posting of opinions in the internet can be considered as an expression of activated public opinion in contradiction to public opinion, which is recorded through surveys and concerns the public. The chapter starts by providing a literature review on blogging and political blogging. It presents the recent advances in the hyperlinks analysis of blogs, and describes the recent hypotheses used for this kind of research. As a case study, the chapter examines the degree of interconnectivity, cohesion and polarisation of Greek political blogs that participate in the discussion and use tags about Greek Parties. Tags are labels of thematic categories of blog posts regarding their subject. In order to cope with the research question, the study records Greek blogs with tags about parties of the Greek Parliament. Blogs with tags about Greek parties ND, PASOK, KKE, SYRIZA, and LAOS are considered. This chapter analyses connectivity patterns of Greek political blogs using a two steps approach. First, it uses a Social Networking Analysis of the blogs using hyperlinks. Graph theoretic properties and indexes are used to present connectivity properties of the blogs, in order to explore the fashion of blogs self-organization. The second step regards the exploration and identification of focal conversational points. The basic hypothesis supported by the literature is that within polarized political systems blogs are forming clusters around central blogs, which are considered reliable or having the same affiliation. Users of the Internet who wish to be informed quickly, locate the focal points of discussion and for economy of navigation, they read only the posts on these blogs. Bloggers also locate focal point blogs and place their posts along with a link to their blog. They expect thus that the readers of focal point blogs will also visit their blogs. The research examines whether this hypothesis holds for Greek political blogs. The quantitative analysis initially uses theory of Social Networking. The blogs and their incoming links along with the association matrixes (0/1) of the blogs networks are recorded. Multidimensional Scaling and Hierarchical Cluster Analysis are used to locate clusters of focal point blogs. Several quantitative indexes are calculated to present the degree of interconnectivity, cohesion and polarization of blogs tagging to Greek Political Parties. Regarding the Social Network properties of the blogs, the Greek political blogosphere is connected, though not presenting high density. Regarding the formation of central blog groups, Greek political blogs conforms well, though not completely, with the communication pattern, supported by the literature. Study of the political and ideological affiliation of the central blog clusters, along with the study of the volume of connectivity (through hyperlinks), describes a system, which is partisan but not much polarized.

Blogs are considered to be powerful and have great political influence. Political blogs have a potential to shape politics, political discourse and political participation. The paper studies how two recent political events about Pan-Hellenic Socialist Movement, are discussed through blogs. It uses Social Networking Theory and Multivariate Statistical Analysis to examine whether political polarization is reproduced in blogging, for the Greek case. The paper also considers how different political events have different impact on polarization of bloggers’ political communication. Findings suggest that polarization is reflected to blogs’ conversational patterns. Debate events are associated with more polarized social networks of blogs.

Abstract

There is some panic in the United States about a possible decline in social connectivity. We use two American national surveys to analyze how changes in the number of friends are related to changes in Internet use. We find that friendships continue to be abundant among adult Americans between the ages of 25 to 74 and to have grown from 2002 to 2007. This trend is similar among Internet non-users, light users, moderate users, and heavy users – and across communication contexts: offline, virtual only, and migrating from online to offline. Heavy users are particularly active, having the most friends both on- and off-line. Intracohort change consistently outweighs cohort replacement in overall growth in friendship.

Abstract

The Internet has engendered a considerable level of debate in political discourse ever since its emergence as a tool in everyday life. With low voter turnout and civic participation in decline, much of the debate has come to focus on the Internet’s ability to provide avenues for political participation and civic engagement. Enthusiasm for this potential waned slightly during the nineties, but it has been reignited recently with the rise of “Web 2.0”, and its emphasis on user-generated content, social networking and collaboration. While the debate had led to discussions of participatory democracy, much of it fails to take into account the nature of participation, and what is advocated is often merely more communication. This paper will more closely examine the participatory avenues offered by Web 2.0 within a framework of participatory and democratic theory to show that it is unlikely to actually increase civic engagement. Furthermore, this discourse is heavily influenced by the evaluative nature of democracy and its associated concepts. This paper will explore how evaluative concepts such as democracy and participation are used in this debate to give credit to claims for the new technologies and to those using them.

ABSTRACT
Weblogs occupy an increasingly important place in American politics. Their influence presents a puzzle: given the disparity in resources and organization vis-à-vis other actors, how can a collection of decentralized, nonprofit, contrarian, and discordant websites exercise any influence over political and policy outputs? This paper answers that question by focusing on two important aspects of the “blogosphere”: the distribution of readers across the array of blogs, and the interactions between significant blogs and traditional media outlets. Under specific circumstances – when key weblogs focus on a new or neglected issue – blogs can socially construct an agenda or interpretive frame that acts as a focal point for mainstream media, shaping and constraining the larger political debate.

Abstract

This study examines the relationship between use of Facebook, a popular online social network site, and the formation and maintenance of social capital. In addition to assessing bonding and bridging social capital, we explore a dimension of social capital that assesses one’s ability to stay connected with members of a previously inhabited community, which we call maintained social capital. Regression analyses conducted on results from a survey of undergraduate students (N=286) suggest a strong association between use of Facebook and the three types of social capital, with the strongest relationship being to bridging social capital. In addition, Facebook usage was found to interact with measures of psychological well-being, suggesting that it might provide greater benefits for users experiencing low self-esteem and low life satisfaction.

Abstract

Blogs have the advantage of speedy publication and an advantage in socially constructing interpretive frames for understanding current events. Blogs appear to play an increasingly important role as a forum of public debate, with knockon consequences for the media and for politics. In Greece where the ratio of internet users is relatively small there is however an expanding portion of bloggers who comment regularly and have the power to a certain degree and in certain circumstances to trigger off political movements. Based on the relative literature, the paper locates Greek political blogs and provides indicators of their popularity and interconnections. As a case study, the paper considers the recent debate that took place on the Web relatively to the election of PASOK’s new President. Pan-Hellenic Socialist Movement (PASOK) (one of the two major parties in Greece) was defeated on the national election of September 16 2007, and this defeat brought up a major leadership crisis. Election for a new leader was held on November 11 2007. The paper examines the inteconnections between blogs that were pros or cons the two main candidates for presidency for the period from September 16 to November 13. Using social networking theory and statistical analysis, it presents and measures blogs’ connectivity, conversational patterns and variations over time. It examines the skewdeness of incoming blog links and finds the core blog groups that serve as focal points for political bloggers. The paper adds to the study of political blogs by reporting patterns of blogging and making one of the few contributions to the study of political blogging in Greece.
